An Interview with NY’s Funniest Nate Bargatze!
We managed to catch Nate Bargatze and ask him a few questions about his epic New York’s Funniest Stand Up Competition win last Saturday!
Congrats on the win, Nate! What was your initial reaction to being crowned “NY’s Funniest Stand Up?”
I felt funnier.
Did they give you one of those over-sized novelty checks? And if so, how hard was it to slide under the bullet proof glass at your local check-cashing store?
I wish. They gave me a money order.
Your routine draws heavily on your southern - read: not New York - upbringing. Do you or have you considered yourself an outsider in the NY comedy world?
Thanks for giving my secret out. I started here basically and have come up through the New York scene.
As NY’s funniest stand up, you are in a unique position to evaluate your NY’s Funniest Competition competition. In one word, please describe the runners up:
Nick Cobb - Loser
Leah Bonnema - Loser
Justin Silver - Loser
Joe Machi - Loser
Adrienne Iapalucci - Loser
Sam Morril - Loser
Mike Recine - Loser
Adam Newman - Loser
Harrison Greenbaum - Loser
Joe Larson - Loser
Are there other categories we should be evaluating comics on besides their material in order to determine who is NY’s Funniest? (Poise? Swimsuit competition?)
Any guesses as to who will win the NYs Funniest next year?
All the comics on the show with me this year. They all have a chance and are so funny.
And the winner of the 2010 New York’s Funniest Stand-Up Competition is…Nate Bargatze! Congrats to Nate - seen here with the legendary NY’s Funniest crown, bouquet, and sash - who is now the proud recipient of $500, a week of shows at Carolines, and the best photoshopping treatment money can buy!
An interview with Nate is soon to come!

NY’s Funniest Audition Line Up Announced
After reviewing almost 150 applications, Carolines on Broadway has chosen which comics we’d like to audition for the 2010 New York’s Funniest Stand Up Competition! With so many quality entrants, we have decided to NOT create a stand-by list: so if you’re in, you’re in. If not: there’s always 2011!
To Auditioners - Congratulations! Please prepare 2 minutes of your best material for our judges and make sure to:
- Check what time you’re scheduled to come in
- Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment
- Keep at least an hour free after your appointment free in case we run long
Carolines is located at 1626 Broadway, between 49th and 50th streets.
To Those Who Didn’t Make it - Thank you so much for taking the time to apply. You’ll be happy to know that each and every application and video was reviewed by our booking department: we know who you are now and will hopefully be seeing more of you in the future. A big thanks to Carol Hartsell!
If you just got Carol’s weekly “Drink at Work” email you know that you’ve got until Sunday at 11:59 PM (and we suppose 59 seconds) to apply to the New York’s Funniest Stand Up Competition. We’ve gotten a bunch of applications but we need a whole lot more!
Applying is super easy (see below) and every application will be reviewed by the booking department at Carolines. This is your best chance of the year to be seen by New York’s biggest comedy booker and by the most important reps in the comedy industry.
So apply today!
Quick Update and Explanation
There have been a few questions, so let us just qualify.
1) We are only selecting 40 comedians for auditions. As we have already had over 80 application, only a certain amount of those who apply will actually get to audition. We are currently reviewing every application we get, though, and will release the list of those with audition slots on October 18th.
2) This competition is open to comics in the NYC Metro area only. As the winner will be booked for regular appearances at the club, you’ve got to live in or near NYC.
Are You New York’s Funniest Stand-Up?
The 2010 New York Comedy Festival’s search for “New York’s Funniest Stand-Up” is a competition open to any and all comedians who think they have what it takes to be called “New York’s Funniest.” Auditions will be held at Carolines on Broadway (1626 Broadway, New York, Ny 10019) on Wednesday, October 20th from 10 am to 4 pm. Five finalists from each semi-final round will be selected to perform eight minutes of stand-up at the finals, which will be held at Carolines on Broadway as a part of the 2010 New York Comedy Festival in front of a panel of some of the most important people in the comedy industry.
The winner will receive a $500 cash prize and a week of shows at Carolines!

Internet Open Call: How to Apply
The New York’s Funniest stand up competition hosts an open call every year looking for the funniest undiscovered comic in New York City. This year though…the open call is ONLINE!

Here’s a video of Myq Kaplan, the winner of the 2009 New York’s Funniest Stand Up Competition. Myq’s 2009 win cemented his place as New York’s top stand up, bringing with everything from his own show at Carolines to a successful run on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” from recording his own CD to being animated into his own cartoon! Myq is without a doubt a comedy force-to-reckoned-with. Think you’re one too?
Check out this clip of Julian McCullough, the winner of the 2008 New York’s Funniest Comptetion. In the two years since Julian won the competition, his career has taken off, filming his own Comedy Central special, appearing in various commercials, and landing the plum role of Stephen Colbert’s opening comic at “The Colbert Report.” Think you’re as funny as Julian?
